CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Phoenix’s body rolled from one side of her bed to the other. It had been two weeks since she left Blaise a voicemail. Her days were spent writing and researching how lupus might affect the final months of her pregnancy. As she got closer to the date the doctors scheduled her C-section, she became more and more nervous. Her anxiety was high, and all she thought about was how alone she would be for the entire process.

Hugging her pillow, she cried silently. This was not how she imagined life would be for her when she had her first child. She thought she'd be the lead anchor on a cable network news outlet, married to a supportive and protective husband and in the prime of her life. Instead, she was a single, freelance journalist with a deadly disease. Where she should have been folding onesies and packing her hospital bag, she spent her time making sure her affairs were in order just in case she died during the delivery. She was terrified and there was only one person who could soothe her fears and ease her worries.

Reaching out her hand, she touched the spot where his body should have been. She was angry with herself for ruining the best relationship she’d ever had. Being in bed alone suddenly felt foreign to her. For the seven months she spent with Blaise, sleeping the night away knowing he was beside her had easily become her favorite part. Sleeping alone for so long made her forget how much more comforting a warm body was compared to the three body pillows she currently curled up with each night.

Lying flat on her back, she looked down at her protruding belly. Since finally coming to terms with what was about to happen, talking and reading to her baby became the highlight of her day. With everyone else giving her space or simply not speaking to her, she used that time to tell her baby all about her. From stories about her childhood to her rebellious teen years, she told her baby every story that made her the woman she was today.

Instead of fighting to fall asleep, she ventured downstairs. Trudging in her slippers she flicked on lights as she made her way to the kitchen. After she’d checked her sugar, she satisfied her craving for lemon-iced cookies. Taking her snack to the entertainment room, she turned on Martin for a good laugh. Finally finishing her binge, she scrolled for something else to occupy her time. Both she and the baby weren’t going to sleep for at least another hour, so she kicked her feet up, got comfy, rubbed her belly, and watched another episode of The Originals. Like clockwork, she yawned at midnight and returned to her room. Sleep never came before then for her. Insomnia was the worst, and she knew it was because she was having separation anxiety from Blaise. She hadn’t slept well since she ghosted him. The night was progressing, and she was simply watching the sky.
